These systems contain the largest amount of soil volume (12" or greater) and are common in applications over concrete structural decks where a client would like to include large plant material. In some cases these systems may be 36" or greater in depth when shade trees are proposed and can weigh 60-200 lbs./sq.ft. and cost $100-$200/sq.ft. depending the design proposed. Often these systems are located over underground parking decks or on top of multifamily or commercial facilities that want to include container plantings into their development program. Intensive greenroofs typically require a lot more components to ensure proper plant growth such as an irrigation system and an elaborate drainage system. These roofs are usually universally accessible and the most expensive to upkeep annually. Many of these types of designs incorporate the project's stormwater management system and it is not uncommon for these systems to include water features or even store re-circulated rain runoff. These systems allow for more plant diversity and a greater range of design depending on the clients proposed uses. Many projects that use intensive greenroofs will include a central amenity such as a swimming pool and contain a variety of plantings including vegetation commonly found in semi-intensive and extensive greenroofs.

Intensive greenroofs also provide the highest amount of insulation which allow for less energy loss through the roof itself. Intensive greenroofs also tend to filter out more airborne and water pollutants and has the greatest potential to provide more environmental benefits.
